Mohandas Gandhi vs. Martin Luther King Jr. - 1935 Words

Mohandas Gandhi vs. Martin Luther King Jr. People all over the world know that Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. did great things in their life times. But which one was more effective during his time? The answer to this question is somewhat biased, usually depending on your race, geographical location, and if you or someone you know has directly experienced the effects of the actions of these men. An Indian would choose Mohandas Gandhi over Martin Luther King Jr. without even thinking about it. African Americans are going to choose Martin Luther King Jr. because he fought for their rights. This cause became obvious that it wasn’t only for the Indian’s right to vote but for their survival as a community in Natal. The majority of I ndians had just stayed in South Africa after their time as slaves on plantations or in mines ended. These men were about to have to pay a tax of twenty-five pounds, an amount they couldn’t pay. Gandhi appealed to the Viceroy of India, the Colonial Secretary in London, and to Naoroji, the Indian member of Parliament (Coolidge 44). He registered as an advocate before Natal’s Supreme Court, wrote articles, gave speeches, and even removed his turban while the court was in session. Though he could not win voting privileges for immigrants from India, he did retain the power to vote for those Indians already on the voting lists. Unfortunately, Gandhi’s hard work did not abolish the tax but he managed to get it reduced to three pounds, still only some could pay this. More important than these two achievements was the Natal Indian Congress. This was a permanent organization with an educational branch and it was available to the poor. Its wide availability exposed the org anization to the masses. After his accomplishments in South Africa Gandhi returned to India. A pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence came on March 12, 1930. The Epidemic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Essay

The human brain is extremely complex, top scientists and surgeons still struggle to comprehend how it works. The way that the brain can process information and help a person to problem solve is amazing, but another part of the brain can hold memories. Some are good--like a memory of a family vacation or of family holidays--but there are also frightening memories that can haunt a person until his or her death, if they don’t get help. For a very long time researchers have focused on combatant PTSD, for very good reason, but now a problem has risen among civilians, and they have not been focused on the growth of PTSD right here in regular everyday people’s lives. PTSD is defined as moments where a person feels extreme terror, horror, or even when they could feel hopeless. Children, who may already feel like they can’t do anything, can have worse reactions to situations like domestic violence. A child witnessing or even being a victim of domestic violence can feel hopeless, useless or really any of the traumatic feelings from above and can develop PTSD. In a study about domestic violence exposure to kids they found that when boys encountered abuse they reacted more strongly than the girls did, even if girls reacted differently in other non-violence related instances (Evans). A different study in South Africa showed that kids who witnessed or who were the victims of domestic violence were more likely to get married later on in their life, and what they had went through as a child, could haunt them or their families for their entire life. It could even transfer over to their kids, and keep the cycle going for generations to come. These k ids were also more likely to not graduate from high school. Which can keep them from getting important jobs to be able to take care of their families. These kids suffered from depression as well as PTSD. I could have run, but I was paralyzed, confused. A being that thrives on selfishness is confronted with total sacrifice. I might have been a wolf, but I still had my brain and it was on overload. I stood there while the mother yanked her child away from me. Her face was wet with tears as she cut her own wrist – â€Å" â€Å"Blood, tears, sacrifice.† â€Å"The usual,† he murmured, echoing words of my own that he’d never even heard. â€Å"Then she cursed, or maybe she blessed, me. I’m still not sure. She said, ‘Damien, from this day on your soul is yours again.'† â€Å"Huh?† â€Å"When I became a werewolf, my soul was possessed by evil. I was myself but not myself. She gave me back my soul and my conscience.† â€Å"Ah.† â€Å"It’s a terrible thing to remember what you’ve done and know how wrong it was.† I understood why his eyes were always sad. Why he never smiled and rarely laughed. Went to Florida, hid in the Everglades. I was haunted by fifty years of faces. Yet the next month, when the full moon came, I hunted. I had no choice. The hunger is a burning, painful thing. You can’t think past it.† â€Å"Why didn’t you shoot yourself before the next full moon?† He lifted a brow. â€Å"I wasn’t quite that desperate. Yet.† â€Å"Yet?† â€Å"What do you think the gun behind the toilet tank was for, Leigh?† â€Å"I thought it wasn’t yours.† â€Å"I lied.† I blinked. He’d lied about the gun. But what was one more lie? What disturbed me was how well he’d lied. I’d believed him completely. As completely as I’d believed he loved me. â€Å"Where is it now?† â€Å"Somewhere safe. I still might shoot him myself. I pushed the thought aside for later analysis. I had enough on my plate already. â€Å"So you went hunting in the Everglades – â€Å" â€Å"Miami, actually. A lot more people. But despite the hunger, I couldn’t do it. The very thought of killing and eating a person suddenly nauseated me. Then I came upon another like me and the sickness disappeared. I could kill them. With every werewolf destroyed I’d be saving lives, and maybe I could atone a little bit for all the deaths.† I wasn’t sure if I believed him. What if he was the power eater? What if he was the white wolf and the brown? What if he was Hector? What if he wasn’t? I wasn’t truly certain my nemesis was here – except for the weird stinging of my back. Which just might mean I was halfway to crazy again. I decided to try a frontal assault. â€Å"You won’t get away with it.† â€Å"OK.
